Chaos
I was gone for a week, and stuff kinda exploded while I was away.

The poppies started to bloom. I have been waiting for them to start for like a month now. I swear they started much earlier last year, but we got a lot more rain in the spring last year.
The poppies are really awesome. I just let them do their own thing, and they'll keep blooming all season. I don't cut them back or anything. The poppies alone get a lot of compliments from people passing by. I'm flattered, but also they're like the easiest things to grow. They also crossbreed and make super pretty flowers.

flowers
In the flower bed is also black-eyed susans and doubtful knight's spur. Maybe the susans are the yellow coneflowers.. I have no idea. I was waiting for coneflowers, so maybe this is it. There should be purple ones too. I'm not sure what's goin on. I just let this bed do whatever it wants.
I haven't seen the bees go too crazy on it which is a little disheartening. These flowers are for them!! That's ok there will be giant marigolds for them soon. The plants haven't sprouted yet. They come out towards the end of summer. I still refuse to let the morning glories grow.

The neighbors are raising a kitten, so she got put into the flower bed to explore. She's so funny. Plants wiggled as she walked around in it.
The milkweed went CRAZY too. It was here when I moved in, so I did not plant it. It smells soooo nice. It attracts a lot of fun critters too. The milkweed beetles are super cute. A ruby-throated hummingbird dropped by too. I've been wanting to get hummingbirds to visit for like ever. I want to get feeders and see a bunch. Hummingbirds are the closest thing to seeing a fairy in real life. I used to see them all the time at my grandma's house, and I wish I could build a nice sanctuary like hers.
veggies

These nerds didn't harvest anything while I was away, so the radishes and onions went to flower. I did buy more radish seeds to replace the radishes. I got a variety of colored radishes and some watermelon radish seeds.
I was gonna twist tie the green beans to the trellis, but it seemed to have figured it out on its own! It makes it feel so charming. I love love love vine-y plants. I think them being grabby is funny.
The peppers are going crazy too. I only put in two photos, but trust me, there's a lot more. We have three bell pepper plants, and I don't even like bell peppers. I'm gonna have to get some sticks for the pepper plants though. The peppers are gonna get too big and drag the plants down.
Unfortunately, my herbs did not like the heat. My cilantro completely died before I even got cilantro. It was HUGE too. The basil is doing okaayyy, but could be better. The other herbs are strange looking. No better way to explain it. Something don't seem right..
My tomatoes recovered though! They struggled with the heat, but also just starting was hard for them. They were showing signs of blight so I was real scared. The rain fixed them up. We already have some cherry tomatoes coming in. Other people's tomato plants are twice the size of mine, so I'm a little worried.

β weed the whole damn thing
β harvest radishes
β plant new radishes
β tie green bean to trellis
β get sticks to hold up peppers
β get landlord to weed wack and mow the yard oh my god

Firsts.

I'm uploading this right before it's about to storm. Pray for the garden, y'all. There's supposed to be big hail. The air is super sticky and humid. My clothes feel wet, but they're not. It's crazy. I love it :)) I love storms.
Some of the first flowers to show up in the native bed were wild four o'clock and cornflowers. The cornflowers popped up first last year, and I really love them. I cannot explain how purple-y blue they are. It's just so bright against the greens. There's a few other new plants that I have identified (using iNaturalist lmao). If it's correct, I will be seeing asters and ox eyes. I'm REALLY excited.
I don't have a picture, but the rhubarb bolted again. That bitch. I did harvest a bunch of it last week, and I made a delicious crisp. I finally know how to make crisp. I messed it up last time because I was fully just guessing how to do it. I guess I had too much pride too look up how to make it...

The snapdragons are looking fun. They're just in a pot, but I think I want to plant them in the beds next year. Again, the neighbors and my partner planted this stuff, so they jsut put it with the herbs. My grandma had them in her garden, and I had always wanted them in my own. I tried growing them from seed last year, but it didn't work.

The stray nasturtiums (round leaf plants in left photo) are starting to go a little crazy. I'm okay with it because I love them, but I wasn't expecting them to be that crazy in the garden bed. They're kind of struggling in between the beds which makes me a bit sad. This is all about learning, though!
The morning glories have been doing okay, but I also cannnot see them that well. The flower bed has really grown a bunch, so the glories kinda stay hidden.
We got our first banana pepper in. It's looking like a pepper! It's really small and cute. With all of the rain though, I don't have hopes for it to be too flavorful. The later ones should be pretty good.
All but one of my brussel sprout plants are getting HUUUUGE. Do I need trellises for brussels? I have no idea. I'll look into that. They're already bigger than they were last year it feels like. I just hope I actually get brussel sprouts this time.
My small green bean patch is looking good too. I know green beans can have issues with Japanese beetles, but I never had any last year. I do wish I had peas. That was fun, but green beans don't get sunburnt like the peas do. This spot gets really really sunny.
The strawberries are doing super well. No birds are eating them yet. I think the mason bees really helped. There was weird mutant strawberries last year, but this year, they're looking pretty normal. The cucumbers are in the same bed, but I'm not sure if they're doing that well. I am a big cucumber enjoyer, so I'll be sad if they don't turn out.

I'm gonna do some work to clean up the garden before I leave. Hopefully I can convince the gang to watch for the morning glories and scare off the ugly rabbit. I am gonna ask them to send me pics of any flowers that bloom too.

Looking good so far.

praise the weather station.
Weather has been pretty calm, but this little feller is doing great. I love him.

the plants
Everything has been looking pretty decent over the past couple of weeks. The milkweed is coming back in the yard. Praying for another monarch to lay eggs on them! I wanna raise monarchs again!!
The rhubarb decided to try and bolt again.
She's a pretty mature plant, so she does it every year at this point. It can be
a sign of stress, but idk she's producing a lot of edible stalks just fine. I gotta harvest more. I've
just been too lazy to because I have to wash it and chop it and freeze it. God, life is so hard when
it's full of delicious rhubarb...
I did harvest some radishes! They're French breakfast radishes. They're less peppery and sweeter than standard radishes. Cooking them brings out their sweetest even more, so I will be trying that soon! I've come to really enjoy growing radishes because I can get a few rounds of them in a year, and they're just so easy. I also just love radishes.

The peppers are coming in too! We have like three different bell peppers, four jalepeno plants(?), and a few other peppers like banana and habanero. I let the gang pick out a lot of what we planted, so I don't remember what we all have. I just water it, let it grow, and I weed the morning glories out.
Speaking of morning glories... those fucking things.
i hate those things..
I have to keep up with weeding them daily at this point. I was told by my beloved gardening grandmother
that just weeding them would make them receed. I swear to god it feels like they're angry at me. They're
coming back with three times as many sprouts as before. It's driving me crazy. It takes me like an hour
to weed them out. I have to get the veggie beds, around the beds, and in the flower bed which is getting
harder and harder because the flowers are finally growing and getting taller.
I looked into getting rid of them, and I found that people on reddit hate them too. It is unfortunate that they are pretty, and I am gonna be missing the cute purple flowers. Whatever though. Be gone foul beasts. I like my poppies more.
A viney flowery plant I do like and want to grow everywhere is growing everywhere except where I
tried to plant it. I
planted about two or three packets of nasturtiums in between the beds, but they have managed to move to
other places. I really do not know how that happened. There's about four plants in the bed with the
radishes and brussels n stuff. Then, a couple have gotten into some flower pots and the basil pot. I
think it was birds, but I have no idea. I love them anyways, so I am okay with it. They shouldn't reseed
themselves either, but if they do, I won't complain.
Lastly, my herbs and tomatoes are doing okay. I don't have photos of them though. Cilantro goin crazy. You just have to trust me. The tomatoes aren't as big as I want them to be, but they're blooming crazy.

the critters (+ fungus)
The mason bees are fully moved in which is great news. We still need to get the variety that likes the veggei flowers, but these ones will encourage others to move in. What cuties they areβ₯

It has been wild bugs galore. The tomatillos keep having these striped beetles on them. I have no idea what they are, but I did catch them in the act. Silly circus tricks.
The stags have been taking over the yard at night too. They fly aimlessly and latch onto anything they
want. I actually didn't know that we had them in MN until last summer when one latched onto my partner's
shirt and I screamed while he yelled at me to get it off. Well, they're so strong that I probably
wouldn't have been able to get it off of him anyways. He just left the shirt outside until the
next morning.
They are goofy, but I am scared of them a little bit. I don't want to get bit or latched on mostly, but if they're chillin, I'll pet them.

We get a lot of cool dragonflies. This one let me get really close to it! I wanted to take a video, but my camera wouldn't focus.

Our landlords next door have a couple of dead tree stumps that various fungi grow on. There was a common brown cup fungus (not pictured) and dead man's fingers (pictured). I'm usually not grossed out by fungi because I love fungi, but this one is pretty gross looking. I think it's so cool though.
The very last critter.
The most important feller.
The toughest cat ever.
Hank.

We don't know where Hank is from or if Hank is actually his name. He's this really beefy orange cat that drops by sometimes. He is fat, but actually built like a tank. I have never seen a cat as strong as him. He is super nice. He's a little oily, but it's clear that he's well fed. He's got a clipped ear, so he's been neutered. We don't know if someone owns him or if he just lives a free life. He's so cute though. The night that I met him, he was beefing with another cat. This put him on edge. In the photo, he's sort of guarding our house from this other cat for some reason. It makes him feel like the garden guardian. I love Hank, and I hope he drops by again. Last summer, we had a rare male calico named Thomas come by. He'd roll in the dirt and get all muddy. In a neighborhood full of noisy annoying dogs, we have our cat guardians. The cats just know that we're cat people, and they visit us because we love them.
That's all for the garden happenings. It's still just waiting for stuff to happen. It'll be another couple weeks before the next update unless it gets overrun with slugs or something idk.

Gif of the diseased warted rabbit will be in this, so just a warning if you don't want to see it.
Not too much has happened. Just now waiting for things to grow. Prune here. Prune there. Water
everything. Things are blooming, though. I'm not sure where our mason bees went. I also can't tell when
they move in either. I hope they're happy out in the world. They were pretty cute on the strawberry
flowers. I actually thought they were flies at first. I don't know if I ever said what species they
were.
They're
Orchard mason bees. They're
incredibly good pollinators for fruits, and they're often used in orchards hence the name.
I managed to get close to one of the gross rabbits. It looked not good. I got close to get photos and videos for the DNR. It's kind of hard to see. Not gonna lie.. it let me get close enough that I was kind of worried that it had rabies. I do feel like this rabbit is stupider than most. It wasn't rabid, though. She (suspected to be female) is just strange looking. Poor thing.

So, I keep a garden related pinterest board kind of for funsies. There's some okay info on pinterest, but I mostly want to find new, cool flowers. I've mostly avoided the stupid ai stuff on there except it's infecting the garden stuff. At least for me it is. I get things like the image on the right. What the fuck? What does that even mean???? Man, I love using bakoing soda to grow tomatoes and levitating cucumbers. Wtf? I already questioned a lot of gardening advice on pinterest, but now I think I will probably not trust any lmao. It's so brainrotted. I got people I trust to ask questions.
My landlord asked me to plant part of her garden while she was away. It rained too much for her to get to it before her trip. I probably shouldn't have agreed, but it was easy to do. She laid things out where she wanted it. She knows a lot about gardening, and I was really into how she intermingled things together with flowers and other produce. I am somewhat familiar with permaculture growing and guilds. It makes me kind of regret not doing that in my garden. I think I want to really work on mixing things up next year. A well thought out garden bed of a bunch of different stuff is so pretty to me.

Another thing I want to do next year is keep more flowers. I can remember flowers pretty well. I just wish I had a bit more income to justify spending a bunch on pretty annuals. I am kind of annoying about annuals, though. They just feel like a waste to me? I'd rather invest in something that would come back every year. The idea of a pretty native flower having its place that it pops out of every year is so much more rewarding than replanting an annual. I do really like some annuals. I'm really into pansies, but they're considered annuals in Minnesota. Maybe I just need to find more flowers? I just think zinnias, petunias, lilies etc. are boring. I'm more into field thistles, cornflowers, or jeweled shooting stars. Obviously, the exception is the lily of the valley, but it will go crazy if I plant it in the ground.
I am really curious about keeping datura, though. I don't think I actually would because I am so worried that some kids are going to eat it, but I think they're hauntingly beautiful. I really want to smell a datura flower. It's supposed to be pretty unique from what I hear. There was datura being sold at a place I stopped at. I was tempted, but like I said, I don't want to deal with it. The landlord also has a a toddler at the age where she's just putting everything in her mouth. Maybe someday I'll have datura or bruggsmania on my own property? Idk. To think on. I just want to see the flower unfurl and the somewhat unknown origin of them is so mysterious. It's cool and they look cool.
I probably won't be posting another update until I get some veggies or if an event happens. I've noticed a lot more aphids than normal, and there's been a cabbage moth flying around.. Their little worms like to eat brussel sprouts. Oh, and a monarch showed up. I'm REALLY hoping we can raise some monarchs again this year. They were so fun last year.
Well wish me luck with all these critters

Much needed rain.

We're finally getting some good rain. Minnesota had some red flag warnings for a bit because we were so
dry. Now, we got this giant rain storm that is quelling the drought. We're still abnormally dry,
unfortunately. I'm praying that there aren't serious fires in Canada this year, too. A couple years
back, we had some pretty apocalyptic skies with the smoke wafting towards us on the jet stream. I can't
describe the way I felt, but I just felt kind of ill and the air smelled bad. Praying to not have that
again this summer.
The rabbits are going crazy. I don't remember if I mentioned it, but we have some rabbits here with CRPV. It's really gross, but the DNR did get back to us. We called to find out if they wanted to do anything with it. They told us to send photos. There's really nothing they do other than get records of it for science. The rabbit population figures itself out with this. I do feel bad, and I am also disgusted by the rabbits. I don't wanna see them! They're also digging the fuck out of my garden those freaks. The little assholes dug up one of my brussel sprouts the other day.

The rain started last night, and it was super cozy. It began with loud cracks of thunder that shook the
house. My partner and I ran out to go look at it. We do this all the time. We love to run out in the
rain or go down the
street to watch lightning in the distance. Little weather nerds together
I'd show you his sick new poncho, but I don't wanna be
posting him without him knowing :p
My new thing with the rain is looking for earth worm Jims. They're all Jim. We went outside before heading to bed with our flashlights to look at the rain as usual, but I started spotting Jims. Once you see one, you start to see a lot, so I look around for all of the Jims. They were MEATY last night. There weren't that many, though. It wasn't like a rainy night we had a couple weeks ago where we hopscotched to avoid the Jims. Anyways, I love the little Jims. They're nice to the garden. May all Jims live good and prosperous lives. May the mud treat them very well.
Okay goodbye. I'm gonna enjoy this rain. It should help the garden a lot.

Storms tomorrow.
So, we're expecting some storms tomorrow. I haven't really been keeping up with WX nerd stuff lately.
It's an all hazards possible scenario, but, as usual, I'm on the line where storms may or may not
form. Nothing fun ever happens. I am just hoping that the new weather station gets some action (peep the
more detailed weather info).

So, I wanted to get a better list of what was actually planted, and it seems that we all have forgotten
what tomatoes we actually got. I'll update the list with what I can remember.
The tomatoes are starting to bloom! I gotta try to remember how to prune them. I kinda just let them do whatever last year (I was depressed), but I want more tomatoes this year. Mmmm tomatoes.
Strawberries are blooming too which is perfect for the mason bees we just got! These ones are for fruits, but we will be getting some veggie-lovin bees soon.
I went on a massive morning glory picking spree today.
I got every single goddamn morning glory that I could see. In the beds, around the beds, in the grass,
everywhere idgaf. I will NOT be dealing with those fuckers this year. I hate them. They make me so mad.
My native pretty prairie flowers will not be ruined I stg. While picking the weeds I did spot a
sprouted nasturtium. I planted a bunch of them, so I am hoping that they come up. They have a pest
control role like the marigolds, but I do just love them. I'd love to get them tattooed.
Pray for my garden fr. I don't want any hail destroying any plants or my weather station..

Things are happening.
The wildflower bed is poppin! The dirt is covered in sprouts. I'm so excited to see cute flowers!!!
My partner, and the other tenants who are also our friends, planted the veggie plants we bought while I went to work. The garden isn't only mine, so I'm glad that they're wanting to do some work too. I want them to eat their veggies!
I want them to have things that they also want in the garden, so I do not remember a lo t of what was bought honestly. I know they got a lot more peppers, some sorrel, and more onions? I'm gonna have to do a quick runthrough when I weed out the morning glories tomorrow.

The radishes are really taking over right now. I keep talking about it, but it is really so many radishes. I have no idea what to do. Anyone got radish recipe ideas? Otherwise, I'm just gonna snack on them like a rabbit.
Speaking of rabbits, it seems that the neighborhood rabbits have CRPV. It's a virus that causes warts to grow on them. It is really gross. Don't google it. We're kind of lost on what to do about it, though. Like, do we call the DNR? We don't know. They're wild and CRPV isn't fatal, but it's spreading. Concerning.
We got the tomatoes planted. I don't remember what the non-cherry ones are, but for cherry tomatoes, we have sun sugars and sugar bombs. We really love the sweet cherry tomatoes. They are great for salads, making ketcup, or just snacking on. Last year, it was always great to come home from work, take my bandana off, and turn it into a bag to carry the cherry tomatoes I'd pick before heading inside.
Lastly, I got a pot of lily of the valley. It smells so good to walk by. I wish I could keep it inside as a houseplant, but it needs winter dormancy. Supposedly, they can live in pots just fine though. I hope it lives because I am so in love with it.
An updated "trying to grow" list to come tomorrow as well as more detailed weather info from the
weather station which is up and going!

The evil..

The morning glories are trying to come back in full force. We're really going to fight them this year. I have their sprouting leaves burned into my memory. May no morning glory survive. They will not pull my poppies down again!

Pictured is what the morning glories look like compared to radishes. I don't think I have anything else with similar sprouting leaves, so it makes it super easy to spot them. I do love the look of the morning glories, but I want my native flowers to prevail.
The bees really love them, so it makes me feel bad. BUT I have other and better flowers for them coming. Big things coming, bees, watch this space.
Fr if any of you are considering morning glories, just know that they basically never go away. Their
roots go like 5 to 15 feet deep in the soil. They make ugly tubors that will always try to crop up. BE
WARNED!

It's beginning!!!!
I think I'm gonna have to buy plants for much of my other stuff. I really fucked up by starting the seedlings way too late. I was just kind of depressed much of the winter, and I didn't want to do anything. That's okay, though. I love buying plants. I'll probably end up buying houseplants, too. I just really need to figure out how to overwinter them with my illegal gas heater. Oops.
Much of what I'm planting will be the same. There's about three spots I'm gonna hit up for the plants. I am going to be super particular about the tomatoes. I unfortunately have early tomato blight which unlike other blights, which are nutrient deficiencies, tomato blight is a fungus. Early blight is when it's already in the soil and late blight is when it gets carried by the wind (I think). All of my garden beds have it, and the only way to get rid of it is to treat the soil with chemicals over the winter. I rent, so I can't just pour chemicals in the yard. Plus, there are ways around it. The fungus doesn't infect the roots. It moves up to the leaves in the wind, but it needs water. All you have to do is put mulch or tarp down and water the tomatoes at the base. This blight also infects potatoes, so I can't grow potatoes.

I think I am still going to try to work on the seedlings. I am for sure doing green beans from seed. They take well on their own in the beds as long as the rabbits don't eat them. The rabbits have already starting digging in the beds. The radishes and onions are doing great, though! I'm already seeing the sprouting leaves of the radishes :)) They're so cutie. I did actually dump the whole packet of radish seed, sooooo there are a lot of radishes sprouting..
The rhubarb, Barb, is HUGE. It bolts every year, and this year is no different. It's technically my landlord's plant, so she had to take care of the bolt (I mostly wanted to learn how to do it without messing up the plant).

The rhubarb is going to be prolific this year. I don't even know what I am going to do with all of it. I'm not that good of a baker, and rhubarb is usually used in baking goods. I might have to get good at making crisp. I have always loved rhubarb crisp, but I am SO BAD at making crisps. They always end up way too soggy. Rhubarb coffee cake is another thing I could do. I can do cakes pretty easily. I am just not the best with cookies. I have an ancient gas oven, and I'm unsure if its temps are accurate. Anyways, rhubarb good.
The wildflower bed is doing some fun things too. There's catnip invading it because there's catnip planted along the side of the house. I'm not too upset that it's in the bed, but I think I'm gonna get rid of it.

The types of flowers that are planted in this bed are ones that take a really long time to come up. The first year was primarily poppies and cornflowers. I LOVED the cornflowers. They were the most striking periwinkle, and they looked like they were glowing at dusk. Anyways because it's been a year since I planted these, we will have new flowers. I really don't remember what's there. It will be a super fun surprise. I have soooomes ideas of what's in it, but I really won't know until it grows.
There are some sprouts that I already don't recognize. There's this fuzzy guy that I am obsessed with. Did I ever say that I'm not that good with flowers? I don't know too much. I just know that I love prairie flowers over any other kind, and I wish florists had more prairie flowers rather than the boring other ones.

Forgot a couple things.

I realized that I totally forgot to plant the green beans and the nasturtiums. I wanted to do nasturtiums last year because I think they're beautiful, but it was too late in the season. They are pretty and provide some pest control. There's a LOT of pest control measures I gotta take this year because they were such a hassle last year. I had slugs that I tried to fight off with beer. I had cabbage worms on my brussel sprouts that I watched ants fight. I had rabbits that sat in my yard too comfortably. Thrips on my tomatoes, etc etc. I don't want to use pesticides, though, so I am depending on other plants that keep things away like nasturtiums.
The daffodils are coming up in the front yard. I think they're so fun. I just wish they bloomed longer. There's a few different kinds that the landlord had planted, and my faves are these really tiny guys that grow in only one spot.
A friend had invaded my yard with a friend of his, and they saw my garden in an ugly state so I did a
few more things. Added the tarp down for the tomatoes (to prevent early blight hopefully) and added the
dirt into
the bed. I also planted the green beans that I forgot to plant.
I was pleased to see that the rain from the previous week helped a lot of the existing plants to grow a
fair amount. There's catnip in my wildflower bed, the creeping plants are growing, and the strawberries
have popped up. It's year two on the strawberries only two more to go for them to be matured. I think?
I'm not sure. I do the veggies. The strawberries are my neighbor's thing.
We spent much of the night hanging out in the yard keeping our rent low by playing with fruit ninja with a real sword, crushing beer cans, and playing with the intercom installed in a car. The young American experience. I had my three silly drinks: lead-filled tap water, a Spindriff, and an American IPA.

At this point of the season, there's not really much going on in the garden. It's just a lot of waiting. The things you do notice is the changing of the clouds and sunset. I have a hard time describing this, but clouds in the cold months feels different than the clouds in the warmer months. They look different because the different temperatures have different air densities, but the vibes are different, too. Early spring and late summer has the best sunsets with the best clouds. Along with the cool clouds, the bats are out working hard eating the mosquitoes. I love those little guys. I will be freaking myself out about rabies later, though.
I will hold off on garden updates until things start really happening. I don't really want to talk about
watering and looking at dirt everyday. I wanna get my weather station setup too just for my nerdy
weather interest.

Started the garden work.
I gathered the household to help in the garden after work. I let the garden die last year, and I left it alone over the winter. I was a little disheartened by the morning glories that took over, the tomato blight, pests, and too much rain. I won't let that get to me this year! I am determined to keep things at bay and have a good garden. Unfortunately, I did start my seedlings way too late. If there's issues, I'll just buy the plants, so it's okay.
We cleaned up the beds and added more dirt to one of the beds. We also got the leaves cleaned up, and yard kinda tidied. We're the messy ones on the block ngl. Keeps the rent down tho :p We got Miller High Life bottle tops stomped into the dirt here (pictured below and to the right).

While cleaning up the garden, we stumbled upon many small critters. Several rock centipedes, a ladybug (a real one!), and many, many earth worms. We took a break at the dairy queen. Mmm ice cream.. and then I spent too much money at home depot and bought a houseplant that I will probably have issues overwintering because I have weird heating in my old house.
I was pleased to see that the rain from the previous week helped a lot of the existing plants to grow a fair amount. There's catnip in my wildflower bed, the creeping plants are growing, and the strawberries have popped up. It's year two on the strawberries only two more to go for them to be matured. I think? I'm not sure. I do the veggies. The strawberries are my neighbor's thing.

The landlord forced the rhubarb with a bucket over top. I'm not entirely sure how this works, but it worked pretty damn well. I may have too much rhubarb this year.
