War of the Worlds

Not a remarkable read in the modern age, but I’m sure it was so riveting at the time. I read this out of obligation, but I still found it enjoyable. Having seen the Spielberg movie first, it was fun seeing the three characters stay seperate. In the movie, the Artilleryman, the Curate, and Ogilvy are all one guy towards the end named Harlan Ogilvy.

Reading about the different machines was fun too. The movie only has the one machine and no cylinder.

A necessary read in the scifi world, so is the Welles radio piece.

The Time Machine

A kind of forgotten piece from Wells. I liked it because of its whimsy take on the future. I can just imagine the Victorian aesthetics.

I'm not sure if this novella was as groundbreaking as War of the Worlds was, but it's still ahead of its time.

This one is sometimes published in the same physical book as War of the Worlds, so you could kill two birds with one stone.

Fun, but not crazy. Kind of forgettable.

Annihilation

I was in so deep in this. It’s such a slow burn, but it keeps you hooked. The descriptions of what the characters saw leaves a lot to the imagination while still being so descriptive. The first book in this trilogy is great, but the second book was such a bore that I dropped it.

I want to watch the Netlix movie desperately. It has some of my faves in it.

Super cool.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

This is one of my favorite books ever. I am not a huge memoir person, but I do love Caitlin Doughty. This book follows her through her depression and finding her passion for death care and good death advocacy. She started working in the death industry at a small crematorium with old men. At the time, the whole industry was ran by old white men, so she sort of had to prove herself. I cannot say too much, but I do really really recommend this one.

I think Mary Roach's Stiff would be a good companion book.

Yes read this please. I love it.

I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream

This is one of my favorite dystopian pieces ever. The idea of AM existing at all is a huge trip. A computer that is basically the whole world? Or are the people trapped in the computer? Who knows? Are the people actually dead? Who knows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really crazy, and if you're an audiobook person, listen to the one voiced by Ellison himself. He does the best AM because he was already a very cynical man.

Also a must read in scifi.
